About pressed amber and the various classes of pressed amber.
There are basically three classes of pressed amber. Each is briefly described below.
Amber Shapes Formed By Pressing A Single Stone
In this case amber is shaped in a press. The raw amber put into the press is shaped out of one nugget. (See How Beads Are Made)
The International Amber Association, Gdansk, Poland classifies this as:
“Modified Baltic amber (Succinite) – gemstone subjected only to thermal or high-pressure treatment, which changed its physical properties, including the degree of transparency and color, or shaped under similar conditions out of one nugget, previously cut to the required size.” See The Official Classification Of Amber Gemstones.

This is a very high quality product and used in some of the best jewelry available.
It takes an expert to distinguish these pressed shapes from those cut from a single stone.
The beads are succinite. The medicinal properties of the amber are not changed. Under an IRS examination, the spectral curves are identical to those of Natural Baltic Amber.

Amber Shapes Formed By Combining Pieces With No Additives
Amber shaped this way is perhaps the most common way it is done. One can make beads larger than those made by cutting or press forming single nuggets. And one can make beads with more color options.
The International Amber Association, Gdansk, Poland classifies these shapes as:
“Reconstructed (pressed) Baltic amber (Succinite) – gemstone made of Baltic amber pieces pressed in high temperature and under high pressure without additional components.” See The Official Classification Of Amber Gemstones.
The important words to note here are pieces and no additives.
Pieces covers a vast spectrum. A bead can be formed from as few as two stones, many smaller pieces, meal or powder. But there are no additives. (See How Beads Are Made)
The bead bracelet with 18mm old amber color beads is extremely popular. Each bead is made from two stones. It could not be economically made by cutting or press forming a single nugget. (See Beads 14mm)

Amber Shapes Formed By Combining Pieces With Additives
The International Amber Association, Gdansk, Poland classifies this as: Bonded Baltic amber (Succinite) (doublet, triplet) – gemstone consisting of two or more parts of natural, modified or reconstructed Baltic amber bonded together with the use of the smallest possible amount of a binding agent necessary to join the pieces. See The Official Classification Of Amber Gemstones.
Bonded Baltic amber is basically tourist trap amber. It looks nice, is cheap and sells well in tourist areas.
It is used to make low priced necklaces, bracelets and other trinkets bought for gift items.
The egg at the right is a prime example. It is amber colored resin with some amber chips mixed into the resin.
